Merlin Puppet Theatre (Germany, Greece)
Merlin Puppet Theatre was founded in Athens in 1995 by Dimitris Stamou and Demy Papada. Initially, they were producing masks and puppets for other groups, but over time they began performing themselves. Since they have begun performing, they performed in theatres, participated in festivals, exhibitions and conferences, and gave workshops in more than thirty countries around the world. Currently, Merlin Puppet Theatre is located in Germany and is a combination of different puppetry techniques: marionettes, table puppets, objects, optical effects and shadow play.
Clown’s Houses
The title of this production, Clown’s Houses, was inspired by Edith Sitwell’s poem. In this first visual performance by Merlin for adults (15+), there is a building, five apartments, and six main characters. The spectator is watching them live their conventional lives in a dark, claustrophobic setting, with their fears, obsessions, and loneliness. With the use of marionettes and other objects, Dimitris Stamou and Demy Papada dramatize the modern way of living in its current form. Through the dark rooms of ‘Clown’s Houses’ the loneliness of the modern man is displayed; prison-like houses, people trapped in their routines and habits, distant from their dreams.
