Based on Mirza Fatali Akhundov’s famous play “The Adventures of a Miser”, this modern adaptation by Dilsuz Mustafayev offers a fresh interpretation of the classic character Haji Gara. Unlike the traditional portrayal of a greedy and hypocritical merchant, the new version presents him as an optimistic man who is even willing to sacrifice his wealth for his friends.

The story revolves around a dramatic triangle involving Haji Gara, Heydar Bey, and representatives of the imperial administration. Heydar Bey, a respected nobleman from Karabakh, loses his inheritance after refusing to marry the woman chosen by his father. In order to reunite with his beloved Sona Khanum, he embarks on a difficult journey in search of financial means and personal freedom.

Alongside the romantic storyline, the play explores significant social and political issues. Through characters such as Ohan Yuzbashi, Mkrtich, Arakel, and the Chief Officer, the production exposes injustice, betrayal, oppression, and the abuse of power. Satirical elements reveal deeper truths about moral poverty, parental domination, and the importance of national identity.

Featuring impressive stage design, traditional folklore motifs, and elegant classical costumes, “Haji Gara” offers audiences both entertainment and thoughtful reflection. The performance delivers laughter while emphasizing the timeless importance of spiritual and moral values over material wealth.
