3rd CIS Games 2025: Women’s & Men’s Freestyle Wrestling
About event
The Russian Federation proposed the concept of hosting the CIS Games. On September 28, 2018, the Council of CIS State Leaders met in Dushanbe and approved the plan.
In addition to putting the CIS collaboration agreement in the realm of physical culture and sport into effect, the Games were organised to fortify the long-standing amicable relations between nations.
The goals of the Games are to preserve CIS national sports as a historical legacy, their popularisation and development at the international level, promote a healthy lifestyle, develop positive physical and moral qualities in young people, cultivate patriotism, the will to achieve goals, respect for history and folk traditions, and improve sports prowess and experience of the athletes competing in international competitions.
Wrestling is a physically demanding and strategically complex combat sport that combines strength, technique, and endurance. As an Olympic discipline, it features two main styles — freestyle and Greco-Roman — each with its own rules and tactical focus.
Freestyle wrestling allows athletes to use both their upper and lower bodies, making leg attacks, takedowns, and versatile holds a central part of the match. This style emphasizes speed, agility, and adaptability, creating fast-paced and dynamic bouts. It challenges wrestlers to blend power with strategy, testing endurance, resilience, and technical mastery.
Greco-Roman wrestling, by contrast, prohibits holds below the waist. Competitors must rely on upper-body techniques such as throws, locks, and grips, highlighting raw strength, balance, and precise control. Known as one of the oldest Olympic sports, it continues to demand exceptional discipline and mental toughness while showcasing the art of leverage and tactical patience.
Together, these two styles not only bring the world’s best athletes into competition but also foster endurance, discipline, and psychological resilience, making wrestling a profound test of both body and mind.
