Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex
Azerbaijan is known as one of the regions of the planet where mud volcanoes are widely distributed. Of the more than 2,000 mud volcanoes known on Earth, over 350 are located in eastern Azerbaijan and in the Caspian Sea basin. The Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex offers visitors the opportunity to explore one of these groups — the “Gylinj” mud volcanoes.
The “Gylinj” mud volcano is located 59 km from Baku and 4 km from the Arzani mud volcano. On the territory of the tourism complex, which covers an area of 12 hectares, a walking path has been created for observing the volcanoes, along with an elevated observation point and viewing platform.
At the complex’s information center, visitors can learn interesting facts about mud volcanoes, their natural characteristics, and their therapeutic properties. Workshops are also held here where visitors can participate in pottery making and painting with oil.
The Nature History exhibition at the complex displays 98 animal skeletons representing the fauna of Azerbaijan and the world, 870 different species of preserved insects, as well as several reptiles, amphibians, and paleontological exhibits. In the central part of the exhibition, which is especially interesting for children, visitors can see skeletons of large animals such as a giraffe, an Asian elephant, a Bactrian camel, a brown bear, and a deer.
The Minerals exhibition presents about 80 different types of minerals discovered across Azerbaijan, including rare gemstones, crystals, and geological specimens.
Visitors to the Mud Volcanoes Tourism Complex can also enjoy leisure activities during their visit. On the complex grounds, guests can take excursions using quad bikes or golf carts, and at the end of the day relax in a modern-style café and enjoy delicious meals.
Exploring Azerbaijan’s mud volcanoes offers visitors a unique opportunity to observe one of the planet’s fascinating natural phenomena and deepen their understanding of the Earth’s geological structure.
