Ilgar Fahmi’s play “Shah Abbas-Nameh” is dedicated to the life of the great Safavid ruler Shah Abbas, his struggle for the preservation of statehood, and his mission to save the Safavid dynasty from collapse, revive it, and elevate it into a vast empire.
The play covers one period of Shah Abbas’s 42-year reign. Its central leitmotif is the resolution of palace conflicts, suppression of feudal uprisings, defense against foreign invasions, the restoration of previously lost territories, and the strengthening of the Safavid state into the mightiest empire of the East.
Act I: “The Chessboard”
Depicts the palace intrigues and political struggles at the time when Shah Abbas ascends the throne.
Act II: “The Smell of Blood”
Portrays Shah Abbas’s suppression of rebellious feudal lords during the early years of his reign.
Act III: “The Dungeon”
Focuses on Shah Abbas’s military victories, the return of lost territories, and the events that follow.
Act IV: “The Heir Apparent”
Shows the dramatic process through which the aging Shah Abbas selects a single successor for the Safavid state among his numerous descendants.
At the heart of the play lies the ruler’s struggle to build a powerful and enduring state, the many sacrifices he makes, and the profound inner turmoil he endures.
The main message of the production: a homeland cannot be protected unless it is genuinely loved.
