French playwright Jean Cocteau is one of the most renowned figures in world theatre, whose works have been successfully staged across the globe. His plays Antigone, Orpheus, and Les Enfants Terribles have been produced in numerous theatres worldwide. Cocteau also explored cinema as a director and screenwriter in several films.
Jean Cocteau’s play The Indifferent Lover, reflecting universal human emotions, is a profound and demanding creative work originally conceived as a solo performance.
Young Lucy deeply loves her indifferent lover, Emil. In order to keep him by her side, she makes every possible sacrifice. Despite suffering from a serious lung illness and enduring severe pain, Lucy continues to sing, trying to hold on to her beloved and protect him. Emil, however, sees Lucy merely as a source of income.
While Lucy’s financial means become Emil’s financial support, his emotional indifference toward her gradually awakens a sense of disgust toward the cold and unfeeling man.
On one side stands a woman who loves with immense passion; on the other, an indifferent lover. The conflicting events unfolding between these two extremes once again prove that loyalty and conscience are essential in any relationship. What fate awaits these two individuals standing on opposite poles? The answer is revealed in the performance staged at the “ArtStudiya” Theatre Studio.
