The Chairs is one of the most prominent examples of the Theatre of the Absurd, reflecting themes such as human loneliness, lack of communication, and the meaninglessness of existence. In the play, a woman and a man arrange chairs for invisible guests and address them as if they were present. On stage, there are no real guests—only empty chairs, symbolizing the emptiness of human relationships and the moral collapse of society.
The characters believe that an extremely important “message” for humanity will soon be delivered, yet this message is never clearly expressed. The play sharply reveals the weakness of language and words, highlighting humanity’s struggle to truly communicate and express itself.
The Chairs is a tragicomic work that welcomes the audience with humor while confronting them with deep philosophical questions.
