One of the most beloved plays in world theatre, Beaumarchais’ “The Marriage of Figaro” was first staged in Azerbaijan in 1940 at the Academic National Drama Theatre. After 83 years, the Azerbaijan State National Young Spectators Theatre has returned to this work, which continues to be performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages, and included it in its 2024 repertoire.
This comedy, with its highly engaging plot, centers on Count Almaviva, who views all the women around him with lustful desire. He becomes attracted to Susanna and seeks to prevent her marriage to Figaro.
The conflict between the Count and Figaro is filled with comic twists and situations. Susanna, Figaro, and the Countess set a trap for the wayward Count. Meanwhile, the Count devises his own scheme, believing that he can expose the Countess’s alleged infidelity. However, his plan fails, and when he sees Susanna emerge from behind the door, he is left embarrassed.
Figaro, the servant of Count Almaviva, his fiancée, and the servants who join forces with them prove to be wiser and more thoughtful than their masters. For this reason, they are able to overcome every obstacle with great skill.
At last, having arranged a meeting with Susanna, the Count waits for her in his garden. Instead, the Countess arrives dressed in Susanna’s clothes. When the Count realizes that he is facing his wife rather than Susanna, he becomes confused and apologizes to her. The Countess forgives him. Meanwhile, Susanna, wearing the Countess’s dress, arrives to meet Figaro. Troubled and suspicious, Figaro nevertheless recognizes her despite the disguise and regrets having harbored mistaken thoughts about his beloved.
The performance, staged in a farcical style, features music by the renowned composers Mozart and Rossini.
Constructed as a theatrical game, the performance encourages audiences to remain faithful in love and family relationships.
