The main character of the play, Gregor Samsa, wakes up one morning to find that he has turned into a hideous insect. His family is horrified by this transformation. His father forces him back into his room, and in doing so, throws an object at him, causing Gregor a serious injury. From that point on, Gregor becomes permanently confined to his room.
Some time later, the family starts renting out rooms to tenants. However, when the tenants see Gregor in his condition, they raise a commotion and leave the house. One by one — his mother, father, and sister — all turn their backs on Gregor and abandon him. Not long after, Gregor dies.
