The newly added play “The Mysterious Jug” at the Azerbaijan State Puppet Theatre promises to take children on a magical journey through the world of fairy tales.
Undoubtedly, this entertaining and enchanting fairy tale play will not only amuse young viewers but also convey important life lessons.
It teaches that honesty is the greatest strength, the truth always comes to light, pure love and loyalty overcome all obstacles, and intelligence prevails over physical strength.
Based on the Azerbaijani folk tale “The Secret of the White Stone”, the play was adapted and directed by Honored Artist Rauf Avsharov in a style characteristic of classic tales.
The production designer is the theatre’s chief artist Igbal Aliyev, composer is Honored Artist Vuqar Jamalzadeh, and the lyrics were written by Sevinc Nuruqızı.
The story itself is captivating and original.
An aging king, weary with time, worries about who will inherit his throne and lead the people after him.
He confides in his vizier, who reminds him that his only daughter has come of age and should marry.
The king, however, is troubled by this suggestion, knowing that whoever marries the princess will also gain the throne.
At that moment, an astrologer appears, claiming to read fortunes and cast lots. The desperate king summons him for help.
Then, using deceit, the king begins eliminating the many young men who come to court his daughter — by placing two black stones instead of one white and one black into a jug.
As a result, the suitors, unable to find the white stone, are sentenced to death.
However, the princess discovers her father’s scheme and manages to disrupt it. A truthful young man finds the white stone and marries the princess.
In the end, the king regrets his actions, overcomes his fear of losing the throne, and lives the rest of his life in peace.
