The central theme of “The Seagull” is the struggle for courage and moral purity.
Chekhov conveys a key idea: “In art, victory belongs to those who dare.” Enriched with dramatic tension, the play stands as the playwright’s literary legacy to humanity.
The conflict of the play is built upon a clash of generations:
on one side — the self-confident, fame-seeking Arkadina and Trigorin;
on the other — the young, inexperienced, and unrecognized Treplyov and Zarechnaya, shattered dreams, fading hopes, and lonely individuals unable to find their place in life.
The ego of a creative person is shaped by their fame. Chekhov’s characters become prisoners of the success and adoration they once achieved. They clearly understand: they matter to others only as long as they remain part of the artistic world. Even Nina loves not Trigorin himself but his presence on the stage.
In world culture, the seagull symbolizes purity and freedom of spirit. Zarechnaya, who compares herself to this bird, is destroyed by society just as her unfulfilled dreams are. In this context, Chekhov’s message resonates like the cry of a seagull — poignant, aching, and timeless.
