The Azerbaijani folk tale “Jirtdan” tells the story of a clever boy named Jirtdan who saves children from a mythical creature called the Div. Jirtdan is one of the most famous characters in Azerbaijani folklore. Many people remember the detailed story of the night Jirtdan and his friends spent in the Div’s house. At midnight, the Div enters the room where the children are sleeping and asks:
“Who is asleep, who is awake?”
Jirtdan replies:
“Everyone is asleep, Jirtdan is awake.”

This line has become a popular saying among the people. Because Jirtdan is a beloved character, parents often jokingly call their children “Jirtdan.” Our performance is also dedicated to this beloved hero. But what adventures await Jirtdan in our play?

Jirtdan goes into the forest with the neighbor’s children to collect firewood. On their way back, they lose their way in the darkness and head toward a distant light. Eventually, they reach the place where the Div lives. The monster tries to lure the children at night in order to eat them.

To save the children, Nino and her colleagues are sent from the Planet of Scientists to fight for peace on Earth. In order to keep the world from losing its orbit, these kind-hearted aliens work tirelessly. Nino rescues Jirtdan and his friends and takes them to the Planet of Scientists. There, the children learn science and later return home safely.

This fairy-tale performance encourages protecting nature, loyalty in friendship, and the importance of being educated and courageous.
