The Azerbaijani folk tale “Jirtdan” tells the story of a clever boy named Jirtdan who saves children from a mythical creature called the Div (giant). Jirtdan is one of the most famous characters in Azerbaijani folklore. Many people remember the story about the night Jirtdan and his friends spent in the Div’s house.

At midnight the Div entered the room where the children were sleeping and asked:
“Who is asleep and who is awake?”

Jirtdan replied:
“Everyone is asleep, Jirtdan is awake.”

This phrase has become a well-known saying among the people. Since Jirtdan is loved by everyone, parents sometimes jokingly call their children “Jirtdan.” Our performance is also dedicated to this beloved children’s hero. But what adventures await him in our play?

Jirtdan goes to the forest with the neighbor’s children to collect firewood. On their way back they lose their path in the darkness. Therefore, they head toward a light they see in the distance and eventually reach the place where the Div lives. At night a Wolf tries to lure the children in order to eat them.

To save the children from the Div, Nino and her colleagues, sent from the Planet of Scientists, fight to establish peace on Earth. These kind extraterrestrials work hard to ensure that the Earth does not leave its orbit. Nino rescues Jirtdan and his friends and takes them to the Planet of Scientists. There the children study science and eventually return home safely.

This fairy-tale performance encourages children to protect nature, remain loyal in friendship, and strive to be knowledgeable and courageous.
