Bengt Alfors’ play “35 Years Later” is dedicated to the problems arising in modern family relationships. The performance conveys the idea that mutual compromise and understanding are essential to preserve family ties.
Kazimir Kant’s harsh character destroyed his family. Left in loneliness, he spends his days in dialogue with his doctor and the objects of his home. One day, his daughter Charlotte comes to his house disguised as his doctor and begins a conversation with him. Throughout their dialogues, this hard-hearted man never once looks at the “doctor’s” face. Charlotte tries to communicate her fate to her father through the play she has written. But Kazimir does not understand and asks why she wants to help him. When she replies, “I am your daughter,” it strikes like lightning in his dream-like world. The father finally recognizes his daughter. This emotionally shattering meeting ends in the joy of reunion between father and daughter.
The playwright and author deliver the message that if it is the will of the Creator, illusions can indeed turn into reality.
