The adaptation by V. Neverov based on the stories of I. Babel and Sholem Aleichem, "Benya the King," is a synthesis of Odessa tales. The connecting link is the character of Bentsion Mendelovich Krik, nicknamed the King. These are ironic stories about the indomitable bandits of Moldavanka and their irresistible leader, masterfully portrayed in birth, love, and death. The low and high, spiritual and carnal aspects of this prose coexist inseparably, just like life itself, vividly depicted with an expressive language.
