The operetta “If Not That, Then This” was written in 1911 and has been staged many times by various theatre companies.
The events of the operetta take place in the early 20th century, during a period when women’s rights were violated and they were exploited by merchants and feudal elites. The main character, the merchant Mashadi Ibad, is a typical representative of such figures. His desire to marry the young Gulnaz and his rivalry with the young, intelligent, and progressive Sarvar become the subject of the author’s satire.
In fact, Mashadi Ibad is driven not only by his wealth but also by the greed of Rustam bey, who has lost all his fortune through gambling. In pursuit of money, he agrees to marry off his young daughter to an elderly man.
Throughout the work, the true nature of both Mashadi Ibad and the opportunistic “intellectual” class surrounding him is skillfully revealed. As a result, society is shown as trying to part with its past with a sense of humor.
The operetta “If Not That, Then This”, which holds a golden place in the history of Azerbaijani theatre, has played a significant role in the development of many comedy masters and young generations of actors.
