The play is based on N.V. Gogol's play and tells the story of hapless grooms, a picky bride, a cunning matchmaker, and an almost successful but ultimately failed wedding of the court counselor Ivan Kuzmich Podkolesin to the merchant's daughter Agafia Kuperdyaigina. The hero, who desperately seeks to preserve his personal world with its familiar order and routine, escapes from his own wedding by jumping out of the window.
