The events of the play take place in Karabakh. The French scholar Monsieur Jordan arrives in the region to study botany and interacts with local noblemen. He represents European science, enlightenment, and rational thinking. In contrast, Dervish Mastali Shah is portrayed as a superstitious sorcerer who deceives people and keeps them under his influence.

The plot revolves around Shahbaz Bey’s desire to travel to France and his family’s opposition to the idea. The family attempts to use Dervish Mastali Shah’s “magic” to frighten Monsieur Jordan and drive him out of the country. Although superstition appears to prevail in the end, the author consistently criticizes ignorance and backwardness throughout the play, emphasizing the superiority of science and enlightenment.
