The events of the play take place in Karabakh. The French scientist Monsieur Jordan comes to the region to study botany and interacts with local beys. He represents European science, enlightenment, and rational thinking.
On the other hand, Dervish Mastali Shah is portrayed as a superstitious sorcerer who deceives people and influences them through illusion and trickery.
The plot revolves around Shahbaz bey’s desire to travel to France and his family’s opposition to this idea. The family tries to use the “magic” of Dervish Mastali Shah to frighten Monsieur Jordan and force him to leave the country.
