Dorian Gray meets the painter Basil Hallward. Dorian’s extraordinary beauty captivates the artist, inspiring him to paint several portraits of the young man.
Although the portrait is admired by many, Basil refuses to sell it, confessing that he has poured too much of his personal emotions into the work.
When their mutual friend, the charismatic and provocative Lord Henry, grows closer to Dorian, Basil becomes resentful but cannot stop their influence on one another.
Under Henry’s worldview, Dorian begins to change and eventually becomes disturbed by the knowledge that his portrait will remain young and beautiful, while his own soul will bear the marks of time and corruption. He hides the portrait — but events take a darker turn.
