The performance tells the story of Richard III, a man devoid of conscience, whose thirst for power drives him to commit terrible crimes and even murder his own relatives in order to seize the throne. On stage he appears at times resembling figures such as Stalin and Hitler.

The people whom Richard has destroyed appear to him as visions. They beg him to put down his sword and stop shedding innocent blood. Yet Richard replies to those calling him to conscience: “Conscience is nothing!” and even proclaims: “If not to Heaven, then forward to Hell!”, leading people to their deaths.

This bloodshed is finally ended by Richmond, a hero who comes from among the people—brave, wise, and composed. He restores justice in the country and becomes the savior of his people.
