People’s Artist Baba Mahmudoglu was invited to the Azerbaijan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre in 1969 and performed there continuously until 2005 as the leading soloist of the mugham department, singing leading roles in numerous operas. Among these were Majnun in Uzeyir Hajibeyli’s Leyli and Majnun, Kerem in Asli and Kerem, Shah Ismail in Muslim Magomayev’s Shah Ismail, Ashug Garib in Zulfuqar Hajibeyov’s Ashug Garib. The khananda created vivid and memorable stage characters.
 200 songs and mughams performed by him, were recorded in the Golden Fund of Azerbaijan Radio. In 1980, in order to preserve folk songs that had faded from public memory and pass them on to future generations, he founded the “Dastan” Folklore Ensemble. For the first time, classical ashug melodies were recorded in their original form by a folklore ensemble. He successfully represented Azerbaijani music in 63 countries around the world.

At the khananda’s jubilee evening, his memory will be honored, and songs that once formed part of his repertoire will be performed.
