This story takes place in Bulgaria. A father, in order to distinguish his four twin sons, buys hats of four different colors at the market. Their names are also loosely connected to the colors of their hats.
Each of the four twins falls in love with a girl named Bonka. They all visit her mother, Aunt Yelena, trying to present themselves as the best suitor. However, Aunt Yelena is looking for more than just physical beauty—she values agility, diligence, financial stability, and, most importantly, pure love. But who is the right candidate? The family struggles to decide, so the twins' father, Mr. Peter, suggests a challenge: the twins must travel abroad and bring back a bracelet. The one with the most valuable and heaviest bracelet will win Bonka's hand.
As she bids farewell to the twins, Bonka gives each of them a flower of a different color. They also make a deal: while the young men are away, Bonka must gather three chests of dowry, all through her own hard work.
In the end, it is only Gulpapak who proves worthy of Bonka's love. He preserves the flower she gave him, cultivates flowers himself, and earns enough through hard work to buy a bracelet for his beloved. He is the one who wins her heart.
The core message of the play is loyalty, hard work, and honesty.
