Kurban Said’s novel Ali and Nino tells the story of the profound and enduring love between Ali Khan Shirvanshir and a Georgian girl, Nino Kipiani, against the backdrop of Baku’s complex social, political and cultural life in the early twentieth century. The encounter between Eastern and Western worldviews, national traditions and religious values forms the central theme of the work.
The story unfolds against the backdrop of the First World War, the establishment of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and political developments in Baku. Ali and Nino’s love becomes more than a personal relationship: it symbolises the search for mutual understanding and acceptance between different cultures.
Exploring love, homeland, national identity, freedom and moral choice, Ali and Nino is recognised as one of the works that contributed to the international recognition of Azerbaijani literature.
