Cavalleria Rusticana

(opera in two acts)

Setting: a Sicilian village
Time: Sunday morning, 1880

At dawn, the villagers cross the square on their way to church. Among them is Santuzza, who hurries to Lucia, mother of her betrothed. The young woman is in despair: Turiddu has once again fallen under the spell of his former lover, the coquettish Lola, who during his short military service became the wife of the wealthy carter Alfio. Lucia’s attempts to console Santuzza are in vain — jealousy torments her heart.

Turiddu appears in the square. Santuzza pleads with him not to abandon her, but her words do not touch him. He roughly pushes her aside and rushes after Lola on her way to church.

Soon Alfio returns from a journey, unaware of the betrayal in his home. Maddened by grief, Santuzza reveals to him Lola’s unfaithfulness. Regret follows swiftly, but too late — the insulted husband swears to avenge the honor of his family.

After the service, the villagers gather in the tavern. The merry feast is broken by Alfio’s arrival. With disdain, he refuses the wine offered by Turiddu. The truth is laid bare; a duel is inevitable. By ancient custom, Turiddu embraces Alfio and bites his ear, sealing the challenge.

The decision is made: the rivals will meet outside the village. Turiddu bids farewell to his mother, begging her to care for faithful Santuzza. Overcome with foreboding, he departs for the fatal duel.

Soon the dreadful news reaches the women: Turiddu has been killed. Stricken with grief, Lucia and Santuzza collapse unconscious in their arms.
