At first glance, “Faded Flowers,” a play by the great thinker and prominent playwright Jafar Jabbarly, may seem like a domestic drama, but it actually embodies deep social issues. The title itself is symbolic. Sara, who loves flowers and is as beautiful and fragrant as one, faces a fate as brief as the life of a blossom. She cannot escape the trap set by her stepmother and stepsister. In truth, it is the betrayal of her beloved cousin Bahram that leads to her downfall. Had Bahram not fallen prey to emotion and feminine deceit, neither Gulnisa nor Pari could have destroyed Sara. Gulnisa, who murdered her husband for his wealth, even takes away her stepdaughter’s love to secure her own daughter’s future. Yet betrayal never goes unpunished.
Social injustice and deception bring about the tragedy of one family. Through this play, Jabbarly reveals the dark side of society, implying that when a family becomes the victim of cunning and cruelty, the very foundation of society begins to crumble.
Directed by young talent Sabina Mammadzada, the performance is enriched by lyrical scenes, intense drama, a delicate leitmotif, and captivating lighting effects.
