Chiraggala–Shabran State Historical and Cultural Reserve
One of the unique sites reflecting Azerbaijan’s ancient and rich history is the group of Shabran monuments. Located at the foothills of the Greater Caucasus and at the intersection of important trade and caravan routes, this region has preserved its historical heritage for millennia.
The “Chiraggala–Shabran” State Historical and Cultural Reserve includes seven monuments: Chiraggala Fortress, Ancient Shabran, the Gilgilchay Defensive Wall, the Pir Khalil Mausoleum, Shahargah, the Ancient Cemetery, and Charaggala. The reserve is responsible for their preservation, research, and promotion.
Chiraggala Fortress, which forms part of the Gilgilchay Defensive Wall, is considered one of the most impressive defense systems in human history. Built in the 5th century and situated at an altitude of 1,232 meters above sea level, it played a crucial role in protecting the local population. Whenever danger approached, a signal fire was lit on the main tower to warn nearby settlements. Currently, access to the monument is restricted due to ongoing restoration and conservation works.
The Gilgilchay Defensive Wall was constructed in Caucasian Albania to protect against nomadic invasions. Stretching approximately 120 kilometers, its walls reach up to 8 meters in thickness in some sections. According to certain sources, it is regarded as the second-largest defensive fortification after the Great Wall of China. The wall begins on the western coast of the Caspian Sea and extends toward Mount Baba, covering key mountain passes of the Greater Caucasus.
Ancient Shabran is one of Azerbaijan’s most important historical and cultural heritage sites. Before Shamakhi, it served as the capital of the Shirvanshah state. Founded in the 5th century near present-day Shahnazarli village, the city developed into a major economic, commercial, and cultural center. Archaeological excavations indicate that it contained around 70 neighborhoods, each with its own mosque. Craftsmanship, pottery production, glassmaking, and international trade flourished in the city.
The Pir Khalil Mausoleum, located in the Gilgilchay settlement, is an example of 18th-century Azerbaijani architecture. Historical sources describe Pir Khalil as a renowned Sufi dervish who lived and preached in the Shirvan region. Following his death, his tomb became a place of pilgrimage.
Shahargah, an important strategic fortification of Caucasian Albania, is believed either to have been built to strengthen the northern borders of the Sasanian Empire and secure the Derbent–Shamakhi route, or to have been constructed by Shapur I in 261 AD as a royal residence and later destroyed during the Mongol invasions.
The remaining two monuments, Charaggala and the Ancient Cemetery, were discovered relatively recently, and therefore comprehensive information about them is not yet available.
