Zagatala Historical and Cultural Reserve

Zaqatala is located in the north-west of Azerbaijan, on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus mountain range. The area of the district is 1348 sq km and consists of mountainous and plain territories. It is located 450 km from the capital of the republic, the city of Baku. The city is situated at an altitude of 535 m above sea level.

The former Jar–Balakan territory was very favorable from a military–strategic point of view. Thus, the roads leading to eastern Azerbaijan — in the directions of Sheki – Shamakhi – Baku — and to Dagestan passed through here. Possessing an advantageous military–strategic position, Zaqatala attracted the attention of foreign invaders even in ancient times. After the Jar–Balakan district passed under Russian rule (1804), taking into account its military–strategic importance, the tsarist government decided to build a fortress in the western part of the city of Zaqatala.

The fortress is triangular in shape; its two sides from the east and west are steep. From the north side, it is at ground level. For protection purposes, a moat 10 meters wide and 5 meters deep was dug outside the wall. The area of the fortress is 11.5 hectares, the length of the walls is 3000 meters, and the height is 3–5 meters. The fortress has 3 large gates.

According to Resolution No. 22 of the Council of Ministers of the Azerbaijan SSR dated January 24, 1984, Zaqatala Fortress was declared a Historical–Cultural Reserve. There are 26 monuments of local significance within the reserve territory.

The film “Invincible Battalion” was based on events that took place in Zaqatala Fortress, and part of the film “Javad Khan” was filmed on the territory of the fortress.
