The first collective-farm (kolkhoz-sovkhoz) theatre in Gazakh was established in 1938. In 1943, it was transformed into a drama theatre and named after Samad Vurgun. It functioned as a State Drama Theatre until 1949. During that period, its repertoire mainly included works by Azerbaijani and world classics, as well as examples of modern literature.
The theatre featured prominent artists such as People’s Artist of the Georgian Republic Ibrahim Isfahanli, People’s Artist of Azerbaijan Mukhtar Avsharov, Solmaz Orlinskaya, Barat Shekinskaya, Honored Artists Aliheydar Hasanov, Ruskhara Agayeva, director Majid Zeynalov, and others.
From 1960, it operated as a People’s Theatre, and since 1988, it has resumed its activity as a State Drama Theatre. On June 1, 1989, it staged its first performance — the historical tragedy “Dar Agaji” by People’s Poet Bakhtiyar Vahabzadeh.
Over the years, more than 70 productions have been staged, and the theatre has repeatedly participated in national festivals. At various times, People’s Artists Zulfigar Abbasov, Tariyel Gasimov, Rafiq Aliyev, Vagif Sharifov, and Honored Artists Vidadi Aliyev and Munavvar Aliyeva have worked there.
The theatre has explored Russian, German, Bulgarian, Turkish, Tajik, and Kazakh dramaturgy. Classical and modern Azerbaijani dramaturgy form the core of its repertoire.
