Emmanuel Jal – a South Sudanese rapper whose childhood was shaped by the civil war in Sudan. After later reaching Kenya, he began using music to communicate his personal experience and ideas of peace, unity and reconciliation. His first album, Gua, brought together songs in English, Arabic, Swahili, Dinka and Nuer. Recorded with Sudanese musician Abd El Gadir Salim, Ceasefire was built around dialogue between different musical and religious traditions. The album Warchild and a documentary of the same name introduced Jal’s story to an international audience. He later released The Key, the Nyaruach collaboration Naath and Shangah, while remixes of “Gorah,” “Kuar” and “Gatluak” expanded his presence in the Afro dance scene.
