Liebestod, or Death in the Ecstasy of Love — under this title, on February 17 at the International Mugham Center, Farida Mamedova (soprano) and Daniil Kirillov (piano) will present an extraordinary evening-dialogue at the intersection of the creative paths of Richard Wagner and Claude Debussy.
The program will feature Wagner’s songs on poems by Mathilde Wesendonck and the final scene Death of Isolde from the opera Tristan und Isolde, where tragic and all-consuming love reaches its climactic ecstasy — Liebestod.
The line of fatal passion continues with two vocal cycles by the French impressionist Claude Debussy — Ariettes oubliées (“Forgotten Ariettes”) and Five Poems of Charles Baudelaire (Baku premiere), composed under the clear influence of Wagner’s musical language.
The program will also include several pieces from Debussy’s suite “Épigraphes antiques”, performed as interludes by the piano duo Anna Rasina and Daniil Kirillov. Through these works, the effect of a virtual meeting of two great composers is created, where Wagner’s romantic drama intertwines with Debussy’s refined symbolist lyricism, taking the listener on a journey through passion, revelation, and the transformation of love into the highest musical ecstasy
