A grand production of Georgian theatrical art will be presented to the Baku audience.
On April 28 and 29 at 7:30 PM, the stage of the Azerbaijan State Academic Drama Theatre will host the two-act performance Prometheus Bound by the Shota Rustaveli National Theatre of Georgia, a production that has enjoyed great success in its home repertoire.
The genre of the production is tragic fantasy. The performance is based on the play of the same name by the ancient Greek playwright Aeschylus.
The author of the stage adaptation and director is the world-renowned Georgian theatre director Robert Sturua.
As the director notes, Aeschylus wrote three tragedies dedicated to Prometheus, but only one—Prometheus Bound—has survived to the present day. The play reveals the hero’s struggle for the salvation of humanity. Zeus punishes Prometheus, yet he does not abandon his resistance and remains faithful to his heroic path, enduring all trials to the end.
In Robert Sturua’s interpretation, the performance gains particular contemporary relevance. In a world that is rapidly changing and increasingly confronted with forms of dictatorship that restrict human freedom, the image of the mythological hero resonates with striking intensity. The god seeks to teach a lesson to those who dare to consider themselves equal to the gods—an idea that strongly echoes modern realities.
The performance will be presented in Georgian with Azerbaijani subtitles.
