“Medieval City of Agsu” State Historical and Cultural Reserve
Would you like to experience the living history of the Middle Ages right where it happened? The Medieval Aghsu City State Historical and Cultural Reserve invites you on a fascinating journey to the past!
Located in the territory of Ulguj village in the Aghsu district, this ancient city was founded in 1735 by the order of Nadir Shah under the name Jalalabad. In the 18th century, it was the largest city in Azerbaijan in terms of both population and territory and for a period served as the capital of the country.
Archaeological excavations carried out between 2010 and 2015 uncovered stone-paved streets, water supply and sewage systems, waste pits, craft workshops, and other elements of urban infrastructure. These findings demonstrate that Aghsu had a highly developed urban planning culture for its time.
Today, visitors to the reserve can explore:
Ice house (Buzkhana)
Juma Mosque
Craft Quarter
Bathhouse Complex
Guests can view exhibits made of metal, ceramics, bone, and leather that reflect medieval urban life and truly immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the ancient city.
Walk in the footsteps of history and discover our archaeological heritage in Medieval Aghsu City!
